LONDON Deisgn Festival 2013

The London Design Festival was conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans. Building on London's existing design activity, their concept was to create an annual event that would promote the city's creativity, drawing in the country's greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to a deliver an unmissable celebration of design.
If anything is evidence of this city's vitality, it's the sheer scope and quality of the Festival events programmed by our Partners. From established businesses to emerging practices, from entrepreneurs to educators, from manufacturers to retailers, our Partners represent the heart of London's design culture. In 2012 the Festival had a programme of 304 projects and events staged by 295 Partner organisations.

Over the last ten years, a number of key design exhibitions have become an integral and vital part of the London Design Festival, each offering an exciting mix of designers, products, talks, installations and innovations housed under one roof. These Destinations are hubs for conducting business during the Festival, providing a focal point for international buyers, specifiers and the media.

The London Design Festival's Landmark Projects are about showing the brilliance of design at the highest level. For the past five years we've been commissioning some of design and architecture's greatest names and most compelling new voices to create pieces of work installed across London.

Now in its seventh year, the London Design Medal has become one of British design's most coveted accolades, awarded each year by the London Design Festival to an individual who has made an immense contribution to design and London.The 2013 London Design Medal will be supported by luxury watch brand Panerai, additional category sponsors are Coutts, Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski.

The Festival’s inaugural Global Design Forum in 2012 was a sell-out success. An audience of 300 delegates attended the day-long thought leadership event at the new Central Saint Martins campus.The Forum brought together a star-alliance of design luminaries, organisations and talents to debate the issues are really affecting the design industry.

iSaloni 2013. Milan, capital of design

Milan confirms itself as the best worldwide showcase for furniture products. From 9th to 14th April 2013 Milan Fairgrounds in Rho will host the 52nd display of the absolute novelties of a sector able to generate energies, intelligence and projects which will ‘flare up’ the whole city for 6 days.

A success repeating every year, which attracts beyond 300,000 visitors from all over the world, thanks to its capacity to present innovative and up to date products.

‘As organizers‘ says Claudio Luti, the new president of Cosmit ‘we have to sense deeply where an increasingly globalized market is pointing in order to be proactive for today and for the near future’. ‘Milan: interiors of tomorrow’ is the slogan for the 52nd edition of iSaloni that will host the biennials Euroluce and SaloneUfficio as well as the SaloneSatellite, 16th edition. An event offering as usual visibility to emerging young designers allowing them to enter directly in contact with the exhibitors. The theme is: ‘Craftsmanship & Design: Together for Industry‘.

iSaloni’s presentation press conference, moderated by Antonio Di Bella on February 7th, pointed out Milan capacity in dictating design tendencies thanks to international successful exhibitions such as iSaloni, able to stimulate creativity, offer job opportunities, express original ideas, interpret changes and point to ‘the beauty of quality’.

Among the participants there was Jean Nouvel, who presented the ‘Project: office for living’ – an event that will take place inside the pavillions dedicated to the SaloneUfficio – while Patricia Urquiola, Piero Lissoni and Antonio Citterio debated on architecture, project and culture, underlining the fact that the 6 days of the exhibition are the result of a whole year’s work involvement.

The best in design is therefore awaited for within the fair district in Rho in April. This event confirms Milano’s leading role on the international scene in collecting together on a unique stage furniture excellence managing to enlive more than 200,000 square metres and providing a place for ideas exchange, communication and networking.

While awaiting for all news regarding iSaloni 2013, there are two important novelties: an agreement between Cosmit, Fiera Milano and Atm (Milanese Transport Company) that will allow visitors to benefit from an all inclusive ticket valid both for the entry to the Fair and for the urban transport. Besides this, a second agreement between Cosmit and the department of Culture, Fashion and Design of the city of Milan will allow iSaloni’s visitors, citizens and tourists to have free entry to the 8 civic museums of Milan.

On the whole, a rich, innovative and special edition is prospected to be watched not only in loco but also virtually on all social channels available to converse with you: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Linkedin and Pinterest.

ZOW 2014 bookings far higher than expected

Decision-makers and general players in the international furniture and furnishings trade have a fixed annual date in their business diaries: ZOW, the International Supply Fair for Furniture Industry and Interior Design, in Bad Salzuflen in February. From 10 to 13 February next year, halls 19 to 22 of the East Westphalian trade fair centre will once again welcome exhibitors and visitors from around the world. The number of exhibitors who have already booked for this "must-see" event in 2014 is high.

The findings before and after ZOW 2013 are always the same: the quality of the trade visitors is excellent and almost untoppable. Customers with decision-making competence meet with their suppliers in a concentrated environment assuring both parties of an efficient and successful trade fair - a perfectly coordinated interaction between people, products and communication.

Praise all-round: quality of the visitors is untoppable

Wherever there is light, there also is shadow. At the last trade fair, it fell on the total number of exhibitors and on the absence of some segments of industry. Voiced by both visitors and exhibitors in 2013, this criticism was addressed to the industry itself rather than to the organizers. Local kitchen furniture manufacturers, for instance, were annoyed to find that it was almost impossible to conduct talks on fittings. Some of the comments by well-known major customers made it more than clear what they thought of this no-show at a trade fair in the heart of the market.

Macroeconomic conditions and developments naturally affect ZOW in exactly the same way as other such events. The consolidation associated with globalization, for instance, and the permanent process of concentration and fusion are indisputable facts. The number of companies active in the marketplace is consequently declining steadily, regardless of their growing success. Flagging economies in many parts of Southern Europe are yet another aspect, triggered by the financial crisis and lack of confidence. The furniture industry is particularly hard hit, for many interesting suppliers have their headquarters and production facilities in such countries as Spain or Italy.

Challenge: Focus on growth in exhibitors

Despite this trend, Clarion Events Deutschland feels under obligation as the trade fair's organizers. Managing director Horst Rudolph: "Whether from visitors or exhibitors, we take our customers' advice very seriously. Particularly with a view to the trade fair year 2015, we are conducting highly confidential and extremely delicate talks with the partners of the ZOW network. Since we have a firm grip on the quality, we are now focusing more strongly on increasing the numbers at our unique business event." After all, the ZOW name stands for an international success story that is not only unrivalled but has continued to enjoy exceptional acceptance throughout the trade fair's history of almost twenty years.

These efforts are beginning to bear fruit. Next year, all branches of the industry will be represented at the trade fair and many leading exhibitors, as well as hidden champions, have already booked their exhibition area for 2014. They include such companies as Hettich (fittings), Siro Camar (ornamental fittings), Ostermann (edges) and Schüco (profiles), as well as the companies Niemann and Senoplast (Austria) and the Italian manufacturer Alpi from the surface finishing segment. However annoying visitors may have found the absence of some players, this will be irrelevant in 2014 - a development that is by no means a "matter of course", but is instead a reflection of the platform's good reputation and the organizer's efforts.

Grid for exhibition area broken up - more flexibility for exhibitors

ZOW is not only a rendezvous for the furniture industry, but also an Eldorado for contract furnishers, exhibition contractors and shop fitters, interior designers and designers in general. ZOW offers these target groups the complete range of creative concepts - as well as reliable suppliers to go with them. The echo from exhibitors was excellent: "All our important customers come here, almost without interruption. Interest focuses on our new lighting concept of infinitely variable colour temperatures using LED lamps for shop fitting and contract designers," says Eckhard Halemeier, head of development at L&S Deutschland (Rödinghausen/Germany), summarizing his impressions of ZOW 2013.

Special areas devoted to RFID and lightweight construction, as well as for interested start-ups with promotion by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) will once again play an important part in Bad Salzuflen. For the seventh time in succession, the supplier trade fair ZOW forms an integral part of the "Trade fair programme for innovative young companies at leading international fairs in Germany". German start-ups and industry newcomers are refunded up to 80% of their trade fair costs within the framework of this programme of promotion by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Even before the trade fair, young companies supplying the furniture industry and interior design, as well as logistics, can apply for promotion directly on www.bafa.de

A first step has already been taken towards optimizing the 2014 event: instead of the rigid booth sizes prescribed in past years, the ZOW exhibitors will be able to negotiate and plan their areas highly individually in 2014. This not only means considerably greater flexibility for the companies, but will also make ZOW more colourful and more varied. What's more, the booths which exhibitors have designed and built for other locations can now be applied to ZOW conditions without undue effort. It is a classic win-win situation from which visitors will also profit.

Forum proceedings published Exhibition in Years 2.0 between internationalization and local development

“Exhibition in Years 2.0 between internationalization and local development” is the title of a publication containing insights into this event which was organized by Fondazione Fiera Milano for the exhibition industry. This international forum was held on 26 March 2012 at MiCo-Milano Congressi in Milan and offered a professional, comparative assessment of actions in progress in the main areas worldwide to strengthen and maintain the leadership of exhibitions in a vastly different global scenario.

The volume analyzes the exhibition and congress industry by examining three topics:

Exhibitions are the main driver behind international development for entire segments of the industrial and service sectors as well as being an effective tool in a country’s industrial policy. The most forward-looking governments have added the international development of their exhibition system to their traditional export promotion activity.
Public stakeholders, often exhibition owners or managers, have very different expectations from country to country of the exhibition business. What is the impact of globalization on local expectations? In Italy, the successful exhibitions were set up as excellent showcases of Italian production and were represented by the business associations. The Anglo-Saxon countries produce a multinational model that integrates specialist exhibitions and media. New players from China are hitting the market, Internet marketplaces are becoming true exhibitions. A growing number of countries are developing television formats that become exhibitions – events. How are business models evolving within the exhibition sector?

The above are three scientific papers on the subject by leading experts who provide an in-depth analysis of three topics: internationalization, local governance, and the cross-fertilization between exhibitions, live and digital events.
